Redbud (Cercis canadensis)
The redbud is generally a low shrub tree but if it
is protected it can grow to considerable size, though no more than 10 m (35
ft.) It is a member of the pea family. This is one of the ways to identify
it, because it produces seedpods that resemble peas. While is is a wild
tree, people of the Midwest often plant it in their yards so they can enjoy
the early pink blooms. Its heart-shaped leaf has an entire
(smooth) margin.
It is
sometimes called the Judas tree. According to legend, it is blushing
because of Judas’ betrayal. |
