Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum)
The silver maple is
also known as the soft or river maple. It is a medium to large-sized tree
usually 18 to 24 m. (60 to 80 ft) in height. It usually has a short trunk
that divides into sub-trunks, which divides into numerous smaller branches.
This makes it an easy tree to climb. The silver maple is often found in wet
lands and along stream banks.
While the silver maple
sap is not as sweet as that of the sugar maple, it can be turned into maple
syrup.

Its leaves are deeply
lobed with pointed tips. Its leaves are dark green on the front and
gray-green on the underside. This gives the tree a somewhat silvery
appearance, especially in the wind.
Though not as
desirable for lumber as the hard maples, it is used in building and for
furniture. |
