Wild Black Cherry (Prunus munsoniana)
The Wild Black Cherry has narrowly oval simple leaves, which are finely
toothed on the margin (the edge). They are shiny green on the top, paler and
smooth underneath. They are about 5cm to 13 cm (3 to 5 in.). The fruits
are dark purplish-black clusters that ripen in August or September.
It
is a medium sized tree that grows to 15 m to 18 m (50 to 60 ft.). In the
forest it develops a tall straight clean trunk and a small crown. Wild
Black Cherry is highly prized by furniture makers. It is strong,
close-grained and makes wonderful veneer. It is equally prized by forest
creatures and is a favorite food for many birds and mammals such as the
bear, raccoon, skunk and foxes.
The inner bark is medicinal and has been used for centuries as a tonic and
a sedative. |
